Clean Monday - 3rd March 2014

This Monday Europlan office will be closed as we will be celebrating Clean Monday. Therefore there will not be a blog until Tuesday 4th March. I hope you won't miss us too much! But what is Clean Monday and what will we all be doing on that day? Have a little read below to find out! See you again on Tuesday!

Clean Monday (Greek: ΚαθαράΔευτέρα), also known as Pure Monday, Ash Monday, Monday of Lent or Green Monday, is the first day of the Eastern Orthodox Christian, Saint Thomas Christians of India and Eastern Catholic Great Lent. It is a movable feastthat occurs at the beginning of the 7th week before Orthodox Easter Sunday.

The common term for this day, "Clean Monday", refers to the leaving behind of sinful attitudes and non-fasting foods. It is sometimes called "Ash Monday," by analogy with Ash Wednesday (the day when the Western Churches begin Lent). The term is often a misnomer, as only a small subset of Eastern Catholic Churches practice the Imposition of Ashes. The Maronite Catholic Church and The Mar Thoma Nasranis of India-Syro-Malabar Catholic Church are notable amongst the Eastern rite that employs the use of ashes on this day.

Liturgically, Clean Monday—and thus Lent itself—begins on the preceding (Sunday) night, at a special service called Forgiveness Vespers, which culminates with the Ceremony of Mutual Forgiveness, at which all present will bow down before one another and ask forgiveness. In this way, the faithful begin Lent with a clean conscience, with forgiveness, and with renewed Christian love. The entire first week of Great Lent is often referred to as "Clean Week," and it is customary to go to Confession during this week, and to clean the house thoroughly.

The theme of Clean Monday is set by the Old Testament reading appointed to be read at the Sixth Hour on this day (Isaiah 1:1-20), which says, in part:

Wash yourselves and ye shall be clean; put away the wicked ways from your souls before Mine eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do well. Seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, consider the fatherless, and plead for the widow. Come then, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, I will make them white as snow; and though they be red like crimson, I will make them white as wool (vv. 16–8).

Lagana bread

Clean Monday is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus, where it is celebrated with outdoor excursions, the consumption of shellfish and other fasting food, a special kind of azyme bread, baked only on that day, named "lagana" (Greek:λαγάνα) and the widespread custom of flying kites. Eating meat, eggs and dairy products is traditionally forbidden to Orthodox Christians throughout Lent, with fish being eaten only on major feast days, but shellfish is permitted in European denominations. This has created the tradition of eating elaborate dishes based on seafood (shellfish, molluscs, fish roe etc.). Traditionally, it is considered to mark the beginning of the spring season, a notion which was used symbolically in Ivan Bunin's critically acclaimed story, Pure Monday. People on Clean Monday usually take their picnic baskets and put inside fasting foods because it is the day that Lent begins.

This 14-Year-Old Boy Just Wrote The Most Important Poem Of The 21st Century

This 14-Year-Old Boy Just Wrote The Most Important Poem Of The 21st Century

If you’ve ever lost faith in this generation or the next one, this 14-year-old boy may give you just enough hope to get through the day.
Derek Nichols decided to post a poem written by his younger brother, Jordan, who seems to be wise beyond his years.
Here’s the transcript of the poem:

Our generation will be known for nothing.
Never will anybody say,
We were the peak of mankind.
That is wrong, the truth is
Our generation was a failure.
Thinking that
We actually succeeded
Is a waste. And we know
Living only for money and power
Is the way to go.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is a dumb thing to do.
Forgetting about that time,
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Changing our world for the better
Is something we never did.
Giving up
Was how we handled our problems.
Working hard
Was a joke.
We knew that
People thought we couldn’t come back
That might be true,
Unless we turn things around

(Read from bottom to top now)

Oh, what a plot twist! Here’s what it reads when it’s reversed from the bottom to the top:

Unless we turn things around
That might be true,
People thought we couldn’t come back
We knew that
Was a joke.
Working hard
Was how we handled our problems.
Giving up
Is something we never did.
Changing our world for the better
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Forgetting about that time,
Is a dumb thing to do.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is the way to go.
Living only for money and power
Is a waste. And we know
We actually succeeded
Thinking that
Our generation was a failure.
That is wrong, the truth is
We were the peak of mankind.
Never will anybody say,
Our generation will be known for nothing.

Jordan Nichols, you’re going to do great things one day. Hell, this poem is already one of them. My faith in humanity has been slightly restored!

While there is some speculation that the poem was ripped off or at least inspired by this similar poem, the two don’t share anything but the overall concept. If the concepts are the same and this 8th grader wrote this poem, the words themselves are extremely powerful, and we appreciate both of them.
No, this isn’t the first poem that could be read forwards and backwards to reveal different meanings, but that doesn’t take anything away from what this boy has accomplished.

Top Secret Drum Corps is a precision drum corps based in Basel, Switzerland. With 25 drummers and colorguard members, the corps became famous for its demanding six-minute routine performed at the Edinburgh Tattoo in 2003. With its invitation to Edinburgh, Top Secret became one of the first non-military, non-British Commonwealth acts to perform on the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle.
Since its success in 2003, Top Secret was invited to return to Edinburgh in 2006 with a new and improved routine. They were invited a third time in 2009 and again in 2012. Under the leadership of Erik Julliard, the band is also responsible for the founding of the Basel Tattoo, a military tattoo show similar to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, now held annually in Basel.

14 Time Travelling Celebrities

Do you ever wonder why some celebrities don't seem to age? The New Age Man has uncovered insurmountable evidence proving that some celebrities are time travelling time lords. Don't believe it? Take a look at the evidence with your own eyes.

1. Paul Mournet was born in 1847 and although he is recorded as dead in 1922, his body was never found. This is because Paul Mournet didn't die. He is Keanu Reeves.

We know this is true because you can read about it on Wikipedia.
2. Below are two photos of John Travolta. One was taken in 1890 when he was 22-years-old. The other was taken in 2009 when he was 141-years-old.

3. Nicolas Cage has led a long and prosperous life. Today he is a Hollywood actor; in 1870 he owned a bow tie of sorts.

And going back even further, Nicolas was better known as Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg.
4. Most people believe that Leonardo DiCaprio was born in the mid-seventies, but there is strong evidence indicating that he was actually born in the early sixties and is in fact a woman called Judy Zipper.

5. The earliest photo of Jack Black isn't a photo; it's a painting. That's because cameras wern't invented in 1751. Back then, Jack went by the name of Paul Revere.

6. Here's a fact I bet you didn't know: Sylvester Stallone was Pope! Here is proof that the film star was Pope Gregory IX.

7. Some see the striking resemblance between Brad Pitt and Union General Isaac Stevens. This is because they are the same person.

He is also Hermann Rorschach.
8. Here is a photo of Jay-Z in Brooklyn back in 1939.

9. Nicolae Grigorescu was a writer and a painter who later changed his name and career. He is now known as Orlando Bloom and works as an elf.

10. Danny Pudi from NBC's Community was shocked when his mother found a childhood photo of him back in 1962.

11. Bruce Willis played a major role in the Pacific theatre during World War II. Back then he went by the name of General Doug MacArthur.

12. Eddie Murphy has been time travelling since the 1920s!

13. Peter Dinklage has been entertaining people for a long time. Here is a painting of him back in 1645 when he was court jester Don Sebastian de Morra.

14. Michael Jackson

These Goats Playing Will Make You Smile

This is truly remarkable and wonderful to see! When I watched the video below, I was completely blown away with how happy, playful and ridiculously adorable these four goats are as they’re having the time of their lives jumping, balancing and sliding on a flexible steel ribbon.
You may have seen animals on trampolines before…well, take that cuteness and times it by 10!

This is definitely one of the best videos I’ve ever seen!
Share this with your friends and family and give them something to smile about today!
