The wildlife of Greece

ophrys umbilicata The wildlife of Greece

Think of Greece and many of us conjure up images in our minds of blue skies & seas, a sun kissed land of ancient history and modern holiday making. But there is another, perhaps largely undiscovered and appreciated side to the Country, its wildlife.
Greece is blessed with a marvellous and diverse landscape of forest, mountains, gorges, lakes, rivers and coastal lagoons. A surprising amount of Greece is mountainous with over one-third of the Country lying over 500m above sea level. For a relatively small Country of around 132,000 square kilometres surface area Greece is endowed with an incredible richness of natural treasures. Here are some of the highlights:

Birds
Dalmatian pelican by Steve Mills The wildlife of Greece
There are 425 bird species recorded in Greece, 243 of those species breed in the Country. That is a huge number for such a small place, making Greece very important for European bird life and a great place to visit for bird watching. Several species that breed in Greece are globally threatened, including Dalmatian pelican, Lesser kestrel, Pygmy cormorant, Black vulture and Cinereous bunting. Greece also holds the largest breeding population of Dalmatian pelican outside of the Former Soviet Union and two thirds of the world’s population of Eleanora’s Falcon breed in Greece.
Plants
Horseshoe orchid Ophrys ferrum equinum The wildlife of Greece
Greece is home to around 6,000 different plant species and over 700 of those are endemic, meaning they occur nowhere else in the world. That equates to about 15% endemism – the highest in the whole of Europe! This diversity of plant life means that when you go for a walk in the countryside of Greece there is almost always something new to see! The mountainous topography of Greece has provided isolation for plants to evolve separately and sanctuary for all kinds of wildlife, helping to preserve this bounty of biodiversity from the pressures of human intervention.
Butterflies
Balkan marbled white The wildlife of Greece
Greece is adorned by 235 species of butterfly, more than half of the total number of species in the whole of Europe. These living jewels are a colourful feature of any excursion in Greece and the sheer numbers of them can be quite extraordinary, usually a feature of the more mountainous regions.
Reptiles & amphibians
balkan green lizard The wildlife of Greece
Greece has around 70 different species of reptiles and amphibians. That is more than either France or Spain, which are both about four times the size! These include some endemic species, such as the Milos Viper (west Cyclades islands), The Peloponnese Wall Lizard (only in southern Greece) and the Levant Skink (Rhodes).
THREE TOP wildlife destinations
Dadia Forest– 36 species of raptor recorded and 20 breeding species makes this the raptor hot spot of Europe!
Peloponnese – the mountains of the north Peloponnese region are extremely rich in butterflies, 100 species in a week in June is a feasible number to see. The area is largely unspoilt and very beautiful too!
Lesvos – Well known as one of the best birdwatching places in the whole of Europe. The island is particularly good in spring, when as well as breeding Mediterranean species there are also many migrants passing through to breed in eastern Europe and Asia Minor.

Hermoupolis, Syros: the Greek Capital of Jazz

φωτό 1 Hermoupolis, Syros: the Greek Capital of Jazz

In Hermoupolis of Syros, the capital of the Cyclades and one of the most beautiful cities in Greece, was successfully held from 30th April to 2nd May the Greek part of the International Jazz Day. The International Jazz Day, is held under the auspices of UNESCO and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and was celebrated this year for the fourth year. The crowning event of the celebrations, took place on the 30th April in Paris, the designated 2015 Global Host City, at the historic UNESCO building, where an all-star jazz concert was held. The events of Syros were organized by the non-profit organization “B-Jazz”, under the auspices of the Municipality of Hermoupolis and the South Aegean Region.

Syros and Hermoupolis have a long relationship with music (it was here where the “Patriarch” of Rebetiko music Markos Vamvakaris was born, in whose honour there is a Museum today in Ano Syros), and especially with Jazz music, as occasionally big names of the international and domestic Jazz scene such as JazzXpress, Eric Inake Group, Braam DeJoode Vatcher Trio, Ramon Valle Trio, Human Touch, Andreas Symvoulopoulos Trio, Stratos Vougas Quartet etc., have chosen Syros for their appearances.

The main venue of the event was the central Miaoulis Square of Hermoupolis, one of the most beautiful ones in Greece, which is dominated by the island’s impressive City Hall, built from 1876 to 1891, according to plans by the famous Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller. The opening of the events took place on the evening of Thursday 30th April, in the courtyard of the City Hall, with Andreas Polyzogopoulos Quartet (Andreas Polyzogopoulou-trumpet/flugelhorn, Kostis Christodoulou-keyboards, Anthony Maratos-bass and Alexander-Drakos Ktistakis-drums), followed by the group Trilogia, with the “legends” of Greek jazz (George Kontrafouris-organ, Giotis Samaras-guitar. and George Trantalidis-drums).

On Friday, 1st May, it was the turn of the Jazz & Bossa Trio (Miranda Verouli-voice, Andreas Polyzogopoulos-trumpet, Theodoris Kotsifas-guitar), which thrilled the audience that packed a central bar of the city, while Saturday, 2nd May, the dance group Lindy Hop Athens, accompanied by DJ Mariangela, closed the events with impressive swing dance moves on Miaoulis Square, and later on, at a nearby restaurant-bar.

Also, as part of the festivities for the International Jazz Day, from 30 April until 6 May was held the first Hellenic Jazz Competition “Apollon” in the historic Apollon Theatre (1864), which is a miniature of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The awards ceremony of the competition, in which many groups participated, was held on 6 May, with Manesis/Gyftakis/Gouliaris Trio winning first prize (1,500 Euros), and BopCy band from Cyprus (Haris Ioannou-saxophone, Dimitris Miaris-piano, Gregory Makamian-double-bass, Marios Spyrou-drums) winning second prize (1,000 Euros).

It should finally be stressed that the inhabitants of Syros and also the numerous Greek and foreign visitors who were on the island during that time, packed the venues of the concerts, and applauded whole-heartedly the musicians and the dancers, thus confirming the importance and impact of the event on music lovers.

5 “Experiential engagement photo shoot in the heart of the Greek archipelago: Santorini”

A beautiful Greek island which once used to have a round shape, now counts four more satellites around it as part of the eternal process of evolution. Thirassia, Aspronissi and the volcanic islets of Palea and Nea Kameni together with Santorini, compose this unique paradise on earth embracing a stunning azure lagoon in the middle.

When traveling enthusiasts Natalie and Tim from the United States reached our studio seeking for a collaborator for a photo shoot concerning their engagement on unique Santorini, I jumped to the opportunity. We met on the island and embarked with immense excitement on a two-part photo shoot, the first of which praised the glory of the famous Santorini sunset and the other allowing the warm Grecian morning sun caress their body and soul on the next morning.
