Easter in Agios Nikolaos

Greek Easter in Crete is celebrated with many local customs and traditions. Easter ( Paska) is the most important holiday in Greece and in the Greek Orthodox Church.

In 2016 Greek Orthodox Easter falls on Sunday 1st May five weeks after the western Easter which falls on 27th March.

Palm Sunday In the morning, all churches offer crosses made of palm leaves and olive branches, reminding the triumphal entering of Christ in Jerusalem before the Passion. Holy Monday & Holy Tuesday. Church services take place in a devout atmosphere during the evening. Holy Wednesday. The service of Holy Unction is performed while the faithful kneel before the priests anointed with the Holy Oil to receive forgiveness. Holy Thursday Eggs are dyed red. The enactment of Christ's Crucifixion takes place in the churches. The faithful offer wreaths to Him. Good Friday. In spite of the mourning the day has a festive atmosphere. During the representation of the removal of the body of Christ from the Cross, it is sprayed with rose petals and placed on the Holy Altar. The Lamentations are chanted in the evening, followed by the exodus of the Epitaphs carried in procession through the main streets.

Holy Saturday

A morning playerful church service is performed. The priests dressed in white scatter bay leaves and rose petals while church bells ring happily and chanters hymn in praise of Lord. Before midnight all lights of each church are turned off and the priest appears at the Royal Door offering the Holy Light to everyone's candle. Then all priests carrying the Holy Icon gather by the Lake where the largest service of Resurrection takes place. Thousands of people with candles attend the symbolic "burning of Judas" in the water, while milliards of fireworks form a dynamic unforgettable atmosphere, bursting the tremendous impact of the event's message. Everyone's exchanging warm greeting and the "Kiss of Love "on the way home, where a special dinner is served with the traditional dish of "Magiritsa" (a strong tasteful soup made of innards and aromatic herbs. It is also served in most of the restaurants on the same night). "Breaking each other's egg" starts now, which is also one of the oldest Easter traditions.

Easter Sunday

During the "Service of Love" the Gospel is read in different languages to express the fact that the message of Christ's Resurrection transmits its redemptive Power to the people of the world. And of course , one of the most spectacular customs of the Cretan Easter is the roasting of lambs, everywhere around, with everyone eating, drinking, singing and dancing, all day long!

MEDITERRANEAN PHAROS Incision to the urban skyline Limassol - Marinos Panagi

Arch2o-MEDITERRANEAN PHAROS-Marinos Panagi (13)
The society and the city lives and grows with achievements that require overcoming the manpower to implement the other (perhaps the most important are those of architecture and culture). The architecture is to respond to the need for achievement, with several experiencing of nature, even the concept of morality.

Sometimes achievements have not only yielded well, e.g. nuclear energy, or the costs of the space exploration. This effort to reach the ends, means ensuring the progress of the significant and perhaps gains unprecedented knowledge. Besides, it is in human nature to be pressed in these directions. To be considered a tall building in relation to the earthquake resistance, is an effort that can give us more results and solutions that can be helpful on lower and current buildings.
The proposal seeks to upgrade capabilities of a region, and indirectly of the city, enjoy or not, in the implementation of an ambitious project such as the tall building, and establishment of a landmark for it.

The theme was chosen because the city of Limassol pressed into coastal area of the deployments that take advantage of the height ratio of the high cost of land, due to the economic return on investment, provided that the sea and the city.
The city of Limassol, the policy of the municipality encourages tall buildings in order to ensure coverage of 30% instead of 50% that is allowed in the Local Plan Limassol to reduce significantly limiting the view to the sea from the rest of the city.

The investigation and analysis of the coastal front, others and the wider region of the Mediterranean sea, was chosen the new harbor area to accommodate the proposal. This area is accessed from the west end of beachfront, which happens degradation compared to the rest of the front. Recently, the municipal authorities of the city announced the upgrade, especially with a public character uses and functions, element affecting the process of composition.
The logic landscaping, led to the search for inspiration and philosophy forms for the building. Because of bridging the two ends of the existing breakwater which is the central idea of the space, searched for building forms which spans the space, which resulted in a vacuum, primarily due to manufacturing and restrictions of the principle ports. Searching in continue examples for inspiration.

The Mediterranean region recounts large and significant achievements. But these are affecting the logic of the proposal are the lighthouses of the Mediterranean, who recorded the legendary Colossus of Rhodes as the grand entrance to the city from the sea, while others and the imposing lighthouse of Alexandria, constructed in the 3rd century. e.g. surpassing the 140 meters.

Apparently the supporting structure organizes forms, and through them the form of the building, always based on principles of engineering. The actual shape of the building and other structural elements will be the result of calculation. This is one of the strongest conclusions of the thesis, because it seems so intense that architectural form can not have independent positions on the satisfaction of taking the loads, static and dynamic. The same data naturally apply to the services that will accommodate the building.

The building has mainly a public nature. Uses hosted in conjunction with the Centre for Mediterranean Studies facilities included in it, are two-way street. As a single operating system, with the participants can be involved, informed and consider issues concerning the Mediterranean.
There are large galleries which host exhibits on the history of hitherto Mediterranean and culture. Also generated a large Naval museum, as the maritime history of the Mediterranean is quite rich. Reason of the public character, and also the activities, it included a hotel who can host foreign visitors and scholars, where it is necessary to stay in the area. Therefore the height that dominates the building can accommodate recreation and observation of the city and the Mediterranean Sea from above. View of the city from the sea, a feature that disappears from the city.

Is given, the tall buildings can accept negative criticism which may be enhanced in the case of our country, due to the scale, the distance from the ground state of technology, because of the seismicity of the region.
Without neglecting these problems, it appears that in the case of professional activity of architects in Cyprus, apparently there will be not opportunities to address this challenge. That is, the complexity and severity resolve issues requiring the study of a tall building, let alone when it destination is for a wide recognition and critique.

Obviously a thesis is a learning process, let alone professional career as an architect must be accompanied by continuing education and in fields not terminated as a student.

The Stress Test for Santiago Calatrava World Trade Center Transportation Hub

Santiago Calatrava World Trade Center Transportation Hub
The Oculus – a massive ovoid bird like structure comprised of steel ribs and glass – was meant to be Ground Zero’s new spiritual landmark. However, the project faced hard criticism due to almost $2 billion overpriced construction budget and delayed completion. More than a decade after the work on it began, the Transportation Hub partially opened to the public last week.

In the course of time, the Spanish neofuturist architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava hadn’t been defensive, explaining that every modification of the original project would come at the price of a loss. Of artistic vision, specifically, which wasn’t good for NY. He underlined that he was not the one to monitor the spending and the authorities had been familiar with the design’s complexity in the first place. But in a recent statement he qualified the negative press coverage as a career-threatening mistreatment. He pointed out that the WTC Transportation Hub must open completely before everybody was able to form an opinion. However, the epithets used by the local press vary from “a symbol of excess” and “a kitsch dinosaurus” to “a genuine people’s cathedral”. What is beyond doubt is that it’s the world’s most expensive station constructed with taxpayers’ money.
In this regard, Julie W. Iovine from the Wall Street Journal writes:
Restraint is not usually Mr. Calatrava’s style. But applied to the whole Hub, it would have made for a stronger, more lasting statement about New York’s resilience than the inflated spectacle offered now, a constant reminder of a time when all we wanted was something off the charts.

The controversial building replaces the original PATH rail system that was destroyed on 11 September 2001. The Oculus, which is also the main concourse, resembles a winged dove creating two canopies with its wings. A network of pathways underneath it connect to rail and subway lines. While the exterior work is finished, some work on the interior remains incomplete. Inside the construction, a slice of sky can be shown each year on 11 September with the help of an operable ceiling. Light turns into an active element and as the architect points out, gives dignity and beauty to the building’s lower levels and pedestrian walkways.

The passion of the critics can be soothed soon, time is known to challenge perspectives and as Paul Goldenberg writes for the Vanity Fair:
The Grand Promenade is now one of New York’s most revered interior spaces, however, proving once again that yesterday’s vulgarity can become today’s landmark.

For Johnson, the questionable excess came in the form of lots of glitter and glitz. For Calatrava, it is in the oceans of white Italian marble, not just covering the main space of the Oculus but also all of the long connecting corridors that lead to the train platforms, to the neighboring buildings in the World Trade Center complex, and even to the tunnel under West Street to the Brookfield Place complex.

Two level retail space is expected to open by August with Kate Spade, Apple and Michael Kors among the leaseholders. Escalators, elevators and stairs provide access to the upper and lower retail concourse levels. The terminal will be illuminated at night. The Oculus’ wings were supposed to move but this kinetic element was removed due to cost reduction.
