Europe's tallest skyscraper revealed as it nears completion


The RMJM-designed Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg is Russia and Europe's tallest building – standing 462 metres high.
The twisted supertall skyscraper, which finished construction in June 2018, is the 13th tallest building in the world. Its 87 floors are currently being fitted out.
Developers Gazprom, a Russian gas company that will occupy most of the building, also claim it to be the "northernmost skyscraper in the world".

British architect Tony Kettle designed the tower during his tenure at RMJM, before handing the project over to Russian architects Gorproject to complete.

Tapering to a point, the spire has a 90 degree twist from foundation to tip, making it the most extreme twist on a tower after the megatall Shanghai Tower's 120 degree twist.
Kettle said he was influenced by St Pertesburg's Peter and Paul Cathedral when designing the skyscraper, which is formed of five towers tapering around a diminishing circular core.
"My sense was very much to create something that was as light and elegant as the historical forms, capturing the changes in daylight in a similar way to that of the golden domes and spires," he said in his statement.
"The tower was designed as a simple organic spire with asymmetrical movement in its skin, to be seen as a singular landmark at city scale."

Piles were driven 82 metres deep into the city's soft ground in order to anchor the supertall tower and provide stable foundations.
Wind speeds at an elevation of 400 metres in St Petersburg can reach 87 miles per an hour, necessitating a specialised structural system to resist the strong winds.

Its smooth glass facade is formed of 16,500 pieces of curved glass, with a system of automatic shutters and valves to make it energy efficient. Energy recuperating elevators, a vacuum waste disposal system and cold accumulators are some of the other technologies employed by the tower to make it more sustainable.

A publicly accessible observation deck will be located at the 360-metre point. A planned restaurant will be Europe's highest panoramic restaurant.
Located nine miles from the centre of St Petersburg on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, the 400,000 square metres of the Lakhta Centre complex also includes a 24-metre-tall entrance archway, a separate boomerang-shaped multi-storey building, and a covered carpark.
Two thirds of the office space at the Lakhta Centre will be occupied by Gazprom's new headquarters, which will employee 8,000 workers on the site. A third of the complex will be given over to public spaces, including a science and education centre, a spherical planetarium, a concert hall, amphitheatre and several squares.
In New York City, French architect Jean Nouvel's 320-metre-high supertall tower has recently topped out, and in Shenzhen Kohn Pedersen Fox's 400-metre-high bullet-shaped skyscraper is nearing completion.

Anacapa Architecture creates AutoCamp glamping resort in northern California

California studio Anacapa Architecture has designed a luxury campground in Sonoma County that features customised tents and Airstream trailers, along with an open-air clubhouse for guest check-in and socialising.

The AutoCamp site is located in the scenic Russian River Valley, which is about 90 minutes north of San Francisco. Designed by Santa Barbara-based Anacapa Architecture – with interior decor selected by San Francisco's Geremia Design – the campground sits within a forested landscape with grassy meadows. The hilly region is also known for its vineyards, which lie to the east.

AutoCamp Russian River is one of three glamping sites developed by California real-estate firm Mesa Lane Partners, which aims to fuse the "adventure of camping with beautiful modern design". The company opened its first AutoCamp in Santa Barbara in 2013, and runs another site near Yosemite National Park.

"Inspired by the wanderlust and adventure of the great American road trip, AutoCamp is an unparalleled luxury camping experience for people who love the outdoors," the company described in a statement. "It's camping, but with the comfort level of a boutique hotel."

The Russian River site, which opened in the fall of 2016, features 24 customised Airstreams and 10 luxury tents, along with a clubhouse that contains a reception lobby, dining area and gathering spaces.
The metal trailers and canvas tents are fitted with high-quality decor, including Casper mattresses, organic throw blankets, comfy bathrobes and stainless steel Coleman coolers. Outside each unit, the team placed a fire pit and grill, where guests can cook up dinner and hang out under the stars.

Overlooking a motor court, the open-air clubhouse sits atop a concrete base and is topped with a flat, overhanging roof. The pavilion's low-profile contrasts with the extreme verticality of the surrounding redwood trees.
Materials such as rough-sawn cedar, board-formed concrete and blackened steel were chosen for their durability, and are intended to age naturally over time.

While envisioning the clubhouse, the design team took cues from two iconic works of architecture. "Drawing inspiration from the iconic Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe and the Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra, the Clubhouse is strongly influenced by modern, minimalist design," the architects said.

The interior of the 3,000-square-foot (279 square metres) pavilion features an earthy colour palette and streamlined decor. A cordwood wall overlooks a lounge area, where chairs are gathered around a suspended steel fireplace. Also visible in this space is a "spider-leg" steel beam – a beam-and-column configuration made famous by Neutra – that is meant to mediate the passage from inside to out.

Whether taking shelter inside or enjoying a drink on the patio, guests are meant to feel a strong connection to the wilderness throughout the pavilion.
"The Clubhouse blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors, offering immersive views of the surrounding redwood trees and adjacent creek," the team said. "The pavilion was designed to enhance the sensory experience of the surrounding landscape."

Luxury camping accommodations have become increasingly popular in recent years. Other projects include the SJCC Glamping Resort in South Korea by Atelier Change, which features a collection of brightly coloured tents, and the rentable Getaway micro cabins, which are geared toward stressed-out city dwellers on the US East Coast.

Девятиэтажное здание, расположенное в северо-восточном округе Шанхая, представляло собой типичное офисное строение — архитекторы не стали перепроектировать его, а лишь одели в новую оболочку.

На первом этаже расположилось лобби, которое объединило в себе и кафе, и комнаты отдыха, и даже розничные магазины.

На втором этаже расположены общественные библиотеки, рабочие места и тренажерные залы. А на верхних уровнях — бар, небольшая гостиная и площадка для концертов. Крыша здания стала изюминкой этого проекта. Белоснежные панели создают длинный коридор вокруг вестибюля библиотеки, делая это место идеальным пространством для проведения вечеринок или спокойного общения с коллегами.

Все пространства выдержаны в едином стиле: белоснежные и голубые облака, словно вуаль, окутывают помещения. Чтобы добиться такого ощущения воздушности и легкости, архитекторы использовали перфорированные алюминиевые пластины.

Фасад же здания остался прежний — из-за ограниченного бюджета и правил городского планирования. Только небольшой фрагмент у входа в виде облака намекает на то, что через пару минут вы окажетесь на высоте.

Каменный дом в иранском городе Йезд

Бюро AWE спроектировало дом в бедном районе иранского города Йезд. Там совсем нет архитектурной идентичности, поэтому дизайн здания был вдохновлен его месторасположением.
Архитекторы вспомнили обычаи местности, а именно шатры, которые возводили на зерновых полях, и постарались повторить эту форму в структуре здания.

В этом доме живут две семьи, поэтому архитекторы постарались разделить сооружение на несколько частей и создать изолированные пространства. На первом этаже находится крытая двухуровневая парковка. А с противоположной стороны расположен вход в дом, где из общественной зоны с лестницей можно попасть в разные квартиры.

Апартаменты на первом этаже имеют двухэтажное жилое пространство с наклонным потолком, отделанным деревом теплого оттенка. Там же есть застекленная стена, ведущая на личную террасу, скрытую от улицы выступом фасада.

И фасад, и внутренние пространства здания отделаны каменными панелями с легким мраморным оттенком — этот материал помогает удерживать часть солнечных лучей и создавать комфортную температуру в помещении.
